Struggling to get STI test kit

Cambridge (She/They And They/Them)

Hi all

Is anyone else struggling to get a postal STI test kit?

Our local service requires you to order the kit online but, no matter what time of day, it says they have already allocated all the kits for the day and to try again tomorrow.

Anyone else encountering problems?

Dee

I guess it's a postcode lottery.

Ordered my regular home testing kit yesterday on SH:UK and it'll be here in a couple of days.

It took me three weeks of trying at 7am every morning. Eventually I go lucky. But it arrived the following week whilst I was away. The day after it arrived I was getting txts telling me I needed to take the test asap and return it! I got home and sent it immediately. All negative. I'll go through the same routine in 3 months.

I’ve been fortunate when I have ordered one that they have come quickly. However I know that locally when I tried to order one from SH24 they’d stopped in my area. Fortunately through local NHS there are still services available so o don’t know if maybe checking under local NHS services may help people waiting for one?

I've never had a problem with SH:24. Always arrives within a couple of days of ordering online.

I'm not sure how it could be a postcode lottery or localised problem as the kits come from, and are returned to, a central UK location

I always find them quite easy to get hold of, if they've all been allocated I just go back on just after midnight and usually get one sent quickly

Jeez, and they wonder why STI’s are on the increase.

I find it’s easier to go straight to the clinic.

The nurse there told me, you can only get 2 kits a year, which is appalling.

My test centre texts me to remind me I'm due a test.

I order online and it arrives within a couple of days.

Results come back pretty quick too.

I can't get an in person appointment unless I have symptoms. You used to be able to turn up and queue.

Because SH:24 don't cover the whole country, only certain areas.

I had exactly the same trouble. Anyway I gave them a ring to order a kit as it wouldn't allow me to order a kit.

Kit finally arrives so do the normal and send it off. Get the text to say I'm able to check my results. Try to log in and it won't allow me to. Changed passwords ect.

Long story short the people that used to do the express kits/results has been taken over by a different company

I've never had a problem ordering online. My kit arrived today. I believe postcode lottery as where I lived before you couldn't get it online you had to go to the walk in clinic. Unless you had symptoms.

If you can't get hold of a testing kit you should be able to call the nearest sexual health clinic and do it in person.

Unless they've started doing that in the past year, I'm not sure this is correct. I've never had a full check in 30 years of donating blood every 16 weeks. And how would the vaginal swab work from a blood test???

I used to order HIV self test kits direct from Passante Healthcare- granted it isn't a full screen- but they were reasonably affordable, reliable and arrived promptly in the middle of Covid.

I'm assuming going to your local GUM clinic isn't an option OP?

They’re not available in my area. It sucks that it’s not available in certain postcodes. The websites direct me to payable testing services called ‘Fettle’, ‘Test Me’ or the nearest sexual health clinic, which is only open office hours, so I would have to take time off work.

They don't...they screen blood for HIV and the Hepatitis virus in its various guises...I don't know of they inform donors of a positive screening either...

The Icash service for Cambridgeshire is only allowing 20 test kits a day to be released .

The refresh occurs at midnight so you will have better luck at that time of day/night.

Women give a swab as well as blood tests don’t pick up everything.

Bacterial infections aren't tested through blood tests.

If you're high risk they may not even allow you to donate.

They have to inform you if you are positive and they ask permission to inform your gp too.

No they don't, and it wouldn't pick up Chlamydia or gonorrhoea as they are tested by swab or urine test.
