I notice a few posters who have got their degrees or are in the process of getting them, as adults. I take my hat of to those who have the discipline and focus to do that while doing all the adulting things in life that inevitably come along.

I couldn’t begin to contemplate re-engaging with acedemic learning later in life, I struggle enough with legally required job tickets and cpd type stuff.

I've sought private tuition from people that teach at university level. One teacher is still the head of his music department for the instrument he plays.

-I still seek out teachers this way, from time to time.

.

I did do part of a chemistry degree when I was young. Didn't complete it.

I felt obliged to do it, coming from a family of doctors and scientists.

I think it depends on what you leave school to do. I did an apprenticeship in IT which has set up my career to date and got the necessary qualifications while working.

I think even with an education, it's tough to ask an 18 year old to load themselves with debt for something that may not turn into a worthwhile career.

English BA, Theology MA, Marine Biology MSc and part PhD in the Social Sciences. I'll never finish the latter. I got distracted by a fish job abroad and it fell by the wayside.

Uni isn't the same as it was. The social aspect is very different. Many more students live insular existences there. I'm always saddened by hearing about experiences of current students.

The whole dynamic has shifted. That was such a big factor for me staying for 10 years. If I was that age now I'm not sure I would go there's so many alternate routes that I'm not sure it's worth the debt if the 'fun' element has all but gone.

Engineers to design the infrastructure of our society

Scientists to discover and invent new things that help our species progress

You keep talking about money like it's the most important thing, yet fail to realise money is simply a tool that allows us to trade more easily between eachother...that's really all that it is, and the moment you realise that, that's when you stop becoming a S L A V E. You might make more money than a doctor, but there are O F models that fart in a jar and sell it, that make more money than you, so how you make money nowadays is irrelevant. Most People that pursue a career that requires a degree do so because they believe it will make their lives more fulfilling, not because they believe a degree will necessarily bring them more money.

I joined the Army at 16, because school really didn't suit me.

Always interested in electronics, that then slipped into computing. Accidentally wandered into IT.

That path is probably closed now, when I look at the recruitment of people much further down the tree than where I am today, the requirements mean I would not get a look in...

First degree was economics - it's come in useful when I've needed to manipulate data. I specialised in game theory and that's something I still use now, 30 years on.

I've done a couple of others via the OU and other distance learning over the years.

It's too much for me now - I stick with postgrad certificates because they're far less work and I can just flirt with topics that interest me rather than having to commit to years of study.

I think the problem nowadays is everyone has a degree and it has caused it to be oversaturated in the job market, if that is the right term. In general, I'd recommend young people to do an apprenticeship for anything that is in demand and has job security. Given that the entire global order and supply chains are changing and will have an impact on this country. Which I wish I would have done years ago.

My brother is 23 and has a degree in linguistics. He can't find a job in anything other than hospitality/retail and he applies for so many just to not even hear back. I feel like the job market definitely is tougher these days and for younger people especially, as so many people have degrees it has devalued some of them.

Unless you are doing a very specific degree that you need to do a particular job like a STEM subject, if you're young these days you are probably better off doing something like a work based apprenticeship which gives you experience as you learn. Some of these are degree level equivalent as well. Experience seems to be valued much more than *some* qualifications.

Uni also isn't for everyone. I dropped out of uni when I was 20 and went into work in the organisation I am still working in, it was absolutely the right decision for me at that time as I really struggled at uni first time round for various reasons. I went back to uni later in life because I wanted to learn and did it for myself, but I have a good job that I worked my way up into over 14 years starting out on the bottom rung of my organisation and not having a degree hasn't affected my career trajectory in the slightest.

Agree with with lots of the comments...particularly _uri00620, sexxyydy, _oebeans & kinkycurvyy ..

I'm not sure if I were 18 now if I would want to pursue higher education in this day and age, unless as has been pointed out I had a very specific career path in mind like being an architect or a doctor etc.

The folks that mentioned they did physics, that's a hard subject I think..(I thought chemistry was hard, but I think physics is harder).

In the music field I went into, most opportunity has come through the provable body of work I've already done, rather than qualification. Sometimes the people's names I've have had 1 on 1 tuition with have opened doors also rather than a full degree. . A full music degree would perhaps get you shortlisted faster for a 'head of music' position at a posh private school; or something similar though.

Yes there's still the mindset that some degrees offer good grounding therefore a wealth of opportunities when that isn't necessarily the case at all. Undergrad degrees like mine are so broad finding a graduate job is a minefield. I think it's why many turn to education because they can't think of anything else to do (then subsequently leave not long after - or are miserable).

I know an accountant friend of mine places a huge value on apprenticeships as those individuals with them are mature (he says) and have experience in the job market.

I hold a Bsc in Computing in Business, though I confess I don't feel that I learnt that much from the course as it was already outdated by the time I left. I did however learn a great deal from others at university, people I'd never have met in my neighborhood.

It also opened up my horizons, despite the expense I still think it's the best thing you can do to train yourself for the future.

To quote Malcolm X - "Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." ✊🏽

Never went to Uni but wished i had.

Trying to instill into my kid that having an education will never hinder you in life, not having one however, may

I think it depends on what you leave school to do. I did an apprenticeship in IT which has set up my career to date and got the necessary qualifications while working.

I think even with an education, it's tough to ask an 18 year old to load themselves with debt for something that may not turn into a worthwhile career."

I would say an apprenticeship was furthur education. May not be a degree, as per OP's theme but it is still furthur education.

I also think you are very fortunate to know at 18 what you want to do as a career. Many dont and fall into various work. Some are lucky and it leads to bigger and better things. Some not so

So from what i can gather reading the above. Lots of you have degrees etc but do not really use that education in the work you do. So that raises a further question, to me anyway.

Would you have got the job without the degree ?

And, from a different perspective, Are degrees "ten a penny" now and have they become devalued ?

Genuinely interested, apologies OP if I have hijacked the original post

Lol I am from a much different era I don't think we even new about degrees and universties nor was there a path to any further education in the secondary education system. I think you had to have gone to grammer school and attained high grade O levels to go on for A levels. The best thing we could go for was a city and guilds apprentiship and pay towards our keep at home. Most of us getting into an apprentiship were earning less than the thickies who had left a year earlier and mainly went into labouring jobs lol. quite a few of them are now multi millionaire property developers but they have put in some graft to get there. My starting pay was £6.50 a week for 47 hours lol, when we had a pay rise of a penny an hour we thought it was fantastic but fooking hell it seemed like fun at the time.

The UK is desperate for physics teachers - plenty of work and the best pay out of the whole teaching tree. Some physics teachers can walk in newly qualified and earn at the top of the main pay scale.

Completed year 1 of a science degree, merits and such. The degree was for entry in to a very niche field at the time. At the end of year 1, fate intervened and I was offered a trainee role in that niche field.

It was a case of either take the role and lose the degree, or carry on with the role and hope I'd get in to the industry at a later date.

I decided the whole point of the degree was to get in to the industry, so I chose not to look a gift horse in the mouth, as they say. Ditched the degree. Got the job. Been in the industry for life.

Perversely doing exactly the same thing, which I enjoy, day in, day out.

People saying degrees are useless I beg to differ. Studying for a degree is so much more than it's subject. It tells employers that you are disciplined, focused and have the ability to learn to better your knowledge.

I am dyslexic, was told all through School that University was something beyond me....

So at 40 years old working full time and raising teens I took the plunge, wanted my kids see me achieve and wanted them to be proud of me and know that they could do anything if they put their minds to it.

After my FDA I got the bug and did my BA hons, then I did a level 5 in leadership and management, then my assessors award, then level 2 in leadership and management....

My youngest son went on to do his degree and holds a BA in Game Development and Maths, been in the gaming industry for 8 years now, worked his way up to manager and won awards for his work.

My eldest does not have a degree but he has diplomas in computer science, hospitality, he is qualified dog trainer, football coach and has NVQ's in Child Development and early years. He is currently an office manager of a building company and is responsible for the building team. He is also a Twitch streamer, being in the top 3% of streamers watched in America, he has a clothing brand and sponsors from companies like ASUS, Marval, Oodie

He is also an advocate for mental health and offers people a safe space on his channels, he was recently approached by Mens mental health charity to be become an affiliate....he has also started voice acting and doing voiceovers

Some people may slate me for the brag but success comes in different forms and the journey is different for everyone....Degree or no degree you can succeed at anything with focus and determination
