Prestonians used to have Parched Peas. 50p for a cup full, splosh a bit of vinegar - delicious.
Now been replaced by the Spud Bros*. Biggest step backwards since they retired Concorde.
*Fair play to them though, doing very well and just about to franchise, apparently! |

Barm can be known as a roll or bap (but that’s wrong) 😁 |

Local tradition here, oop norf, is to stick a pie in between 2 loaves of bread.
A pie sandwich if you will..
-not my thing though, really.
I've since found a couple of hand written notes of indian recipes my mum used to make. There was a tomato-potato-cauliflower one that's really good..and also an aubergine, peanut and coconut dish she used to make that tasted incredible. Gonna give them a try soon. |

A patty is not a fish cake. It has no fish in it. A patty is mashed potato with herbs, battered and deep fried. |

Mashed potato with herbs (normally sage) shaped into a round and about an inch thick, battered and deep fried.
People form other areas of the country will argue and say it is just a fish cake but a Hull patty does not contain any fish. |

Haven’t seen many of these in ric steins around Britain, but not really a local tradition but was staying near Manchester airport and there was a 50/50 take away you could have 50. % chippy and 50% Chinese in the same tray, after that we all came to the conclusion that maybe it was time to head south back home ( no this is not a north south debate there is a post running concerning that) |

A patty where I live now (east coast) is sliced potato and fish in batter ,which was called a fish cake where i grew up(west Yorkshire)
The fishcakes we have with mashed potatoes also have fish in too.
I guess it is like the cob/barm/breadbun debate 🤣🤣 |

Not really because a Hull pattie is totally different to what you are describing the cob/barm etc debate are all different names for the same thing. |

Totally agree about gear farm being the best. Though a home cooked one is hard to beat. I'm a little jealous, might have to settle for a philps. |

Potato, sage & onion I think, I probably don't want to know, all covered in batter. |

I'd say there's been an improvement of late. Still not quite as good as they once were, but way better than rowes.
But gear farm is my favourite by far. |

"Pie, mash and liquor, smothered in vinegar and white pepper.
They don't use eel water for the liquor any more. I don't think my local one even sells eels."
Most use parsley sauce. Cookes was my local until it closed down. I was brought up on the stuff |

"I’m a fussy eater don’t like oatcakes or Welsh cakes I can remember a kind lady in Aberdeen brought in these cakes deep fried lard and salt and batter I can’t remember the name but Jesus they were vile she said they all eat them when the morning are cold "
That will be "Butteries" - basically it's a kind of pastry eaten in the morning, spread with butter, or sometimes toasted with syrup.
We also eat stovies (with oat cakes and beetroot).
Cullen Skink is a pretty local thing as well - creamy haddock and tattie soup. Fabulous. |

Had another think about this and I think "Potted head" must be a pretty local thing. Basically I think it's the Ronseal of things you can buy from the butchers. Spiced meat, slightly jellyfied. My dad buys it, but he also likes fish thats been left outside for half a year in salt, then boiled with a mustard sauce - brilliantly they call it "hairy willie". Not so good, the smell seeps into the very fabric of your house when it's cooled, and it reeks for about a week. Thoroughly disgusting!!! |

I travel with work and always try to have something regional food and drink wise (if I’m staying in a hotel)
It’s usually easier to have a regional pint in a pub than the food
Always have a pastie in Cornwall and once was enough for the stargazy pie lol it was ok bar the fish heads |
