People will say their heroes and that's absolutely fine but most of them excel only at being them and their band and often would be found "lacking" if asked to play other styles/pieces. Again that's fine. It really does NOT matter.
My fave suggestion is always, for people who have never heard her play drums or thought she was "just" a amazing singer, is to watch Karen Carpenter...

Neil Peart/Buddy Rich/John Bonham all insanely talented and very different - I don’t know how you measure the ‘best’ in something like this are there proficiencies that get marked and a total score?
Theres so many I have never heard of who play sessions because they get it right first time… every time they will never be household names but they’re probably amongst the best players out there.

John Bonham is overrated. Yes he is a superb drummer but there were lots of other great drummers from that time period that get overlooked.
Neil Peart is overrated as well, the best drummer in Rush but what else did he do outside of Rush?
Jim Gordon, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie et al, played on thousand of records in all styles of music. |

To be fare there can never be the out right best finest drummer,vocalist,bass,lead,keyboard as its down to personal taste and style genre etc,i rate Roger Taylor superb on Sheer Heart Attack and on Live Killer's but first cassette i bought was Night at the Opera been fan for years.
Earlier someone on thread mentioned Cozy Powell when i was a kid he released a single called "Dance with the Devil"

Not going to argue otherwise but deffo check out Greyson Nekrutman on youtube. Does some quality and wide ranging stuff. Very technically gifted. |

Given that it's completely impossible to conduct a meaningful comparison across genres - Rich vs. Watts, for example - this is an utterly pointless discussion.
It might be worse, I suppose - it might have been a topic related to swinging.
