So this has been going on a while and I know I'm right.
There is a certain person on the forums who refers to road traffic islands as roundabouts..
Please tell me, are they roundabouts or islands? |

Clue is in the name....roundabout, it's round and you drive around it.
Island is for separating traffic and provides a safe place for pedestrians to stand. Traffic does not drive around it, and it's more oblong than a round shape so no. It's nowhere near to being a roundabout

"As in the islands that you just drive to the left of and dont drive all the way round 😳
I may be taking this thread a little too seriously 🙈🙈"
I like this thinking. I knew someone sensible would give the right answer 😂 |

No no no. It's an island because it isolated and surrounded on all sides. I think they are both islands |

I agree. I'm really glad we can have normal conversations on here. It's not just naked bodies and sex talk. Some decent folk here. I also now understand why there are so many accidents. 😜 |

The round mounds at intersections of roads are called roundabouts or mini roundabouts. Vehicles go around them to turn left, go straight, turn right, or on dual carriageways to go back the way you came from.
An Island is in a main road in them middle of traffic, allowing people to cross the road. |

This sums it up. Is the person in question a driver? Because if so I bet their directions are shite. “Down that road, turn left at the roundabout (island) can on and you will see another roundabout (island) and you turn right.
Nightmare! |

If the only access onto the encircling road is via a give way or stop sign.....It's a roundabout. If any part forms part of an ongoing carriageway.....it's an island.
If there are pirates burying treasure it's also an island. |

Anything built up on a road, where that be crossing points, round abouts, dividers etc, are all classed as islands.
For example a pianted round about isnt, one with curbs is.
Thats what ive been told on a number of CPC Courses, because apparently im a professional driver. |

I always thought islands were the bits in the middle of the road that kind of directed you to which side you should be on. They usually have that blue arrow pointing diagonally downwards.
Some fool always decides to park in front of one so nobody can go around them |

They are different things all together
Road traffic islands are raised or painted areas on the road that are designed to separate lanes of traffic. They can be found in various forms, such as pedestrian refuges or channelizing islands.
Roundabout is a circular junction |

"A roundabout or island
Either us correct as the language evolves, personally I use both but find i use island more now than before.
The magic island doesn't have the same ring to it though.

Traffic Islands are a small place of refuge for people crossing the road, usually in the centre.
Roundabouts are not always round and are sometimes constructed with small satellite roundabouts.
Tell your friend to brush up on the highway code.

My Sat Nav says .......... At the roundabout take the third exit..... etc etc ......
I know that a roundabout is a circular construction placed where several roads meet which allows traffice to drive around it and locate the exit they need.
Ive always understood an ISLAND to be a place of refuge or a landing where pedestrians can stand when they are waiting to cross or they are where the traffic lights are ....... most times they have kerbstones around them and are paved or tarmaced... but the thing that cars drive around see that ? AROUND is a roundabout! |

The Maldives is a chain of islands.
British roads - especially those in that shithole Milton Keynes have roundabouts.
Hope that clears it up OP.

The original name was gyratory circus or simply circular island.
In engineering terms the raised central area is an island. Traffic island is the broad term referring to any raised or painted area within a roadway used to guide traffic, provide pedestrian refuge, or separate lanes.
I would also add that many have been named either officially or locally target include the name island.
The Magic Roundabout in Swindon was originally called "County Islands"
And there are loads of famous named islands across the UK:
Spitfire Island, Birmingham
Haydock Island, Merseyside
Stonebridge Island, Warwickshire
Longbridge Island, Birmingham
And probably more... |

If its painted on the road, roundabout.
If it has trees growing out of it, island! |

Its a draw!!
Islands and roundabouts are both types of traffic control features on roads.
Islands are raised areas in the center of a road, often used to allow pedestrians to cross the road or to divide traffic flows. They can be found in various forms, including pedestrian crossings and traffic calming devices.
Roundabouts are circular junctions where traffic moves in one direction around a central island. They are designed to reduce traffic speeds and improve safety by minimizing the likelihood of collisions.
In summary, while islands can be part of roundabouts, they are distinct features that serve different purposes in traffic management. |

Living in a city that is famed for its roundabouts having (according to Google) 130+ roundabouts
The reason is say the number is because most of them “roundabouts have islands separating the 2 carriage ways
Islands are put in place usually as traffic calming measures for junctions or crossings for instance
The roundabout was designed as a cheaper alternative to traffic lights that need electric feed and maintenance roundabouts are for vehicles to change direction easier where alternative roads meet
The Highway Code will clear up your dispute quite easily

"Traffic Islands are usually in the middle of pedestrian crossings.
I have heard the term used though for larger roundabouts, the type that have trees on"

Definition … just one of
“ island is any piece of sub-continental land that is completely surrounded by water. Islands are smaller than continents and can be located in oceans, seas, lakes, or rivers. A group of islands is called an archipelago, while very small islands are known as islets, cays, or keys. ”
I therefore suggest it’s a roundabout !!!
My definition
You can’t fish off a traffic island … |

Islands would be like the pedestrian crossings that be all random triangular shapes, no?
I've never heard a roundabout referred to as an island.
Even the dinky painted ones get called a mini-roundabout. |
