Accidentally fell down a YouTube rabbit hole last night watching cave exploration and disaster videos.
People army crawling through tunnels the width of a pringles tube, miles underground while the cave threatens to kill them every 30 seconds.
It's quite fascinating! I don't know whether they are extremely brave or just insane...
Could you do it? Have you done it? Or is it an absolutely no way in hell? |

"Er, no.
Did you see the one where they took the wrong turn ? "
The Nutty Putty cave? He got stuck head first and despite rescue efforts he eventually died and his body was never recovered. |

I did a quick Google search on this... They filled it with concrete after he passed with his body still inside? 😱 |

Ive dcaved and potholed a few times, did a few near Ribblehead viaduct where you look at the hole and think... No way! My ass wont fit, but it does and have to drop down and twist as you go in.. Immediately commited! Im not about to start wiggling in reverse in a spiral.
Sometimes its head and shoulders first directly down and back on yourself.
One was a close squeeze and the deeper we went the more times you just catch your helmet, your heart starts to think 'hundreds of years water has been flowing through here what if today the top drops and im still in the middle' we had checked the weather because that system floods and we were going to end up in a squeeze.
Started out occasional bumps as we scrambled, then crawling and catching your helmet loads as you begin to army crawl, you look ahead and theres a sliver of light, but your helmet needs to be sideways, your shimmying along on your stomach, using your feet to push yourself trying not to kick your mate in the face. Every now and then you have to rest, its tiring, its a long way, your not moving much each time and theres still so far to go and then suddenly that sliver of light is a space you can roll into and a hole with the brightest light draws you to the surface and pop!! Your several hundred metres from where you went in feeling like the earth just gave birth to you, squinting at the sky and taking the deepest breath!
Some systems are really fun.. But there is always that thought of how easy it would be to get lost |

Yes😭 he was stuck there for well over 24 hours I'm sure. They tried winching him out but failed. He got to speak to his wife who was pregnant at the time over a radio and paramedics gave him pain relief. Literally terrifying! |

I don't understand the appeal either. I get that people enjoy extreme sports, but that's waaayyy past extreme. |

I did it in the last year of school. Went on an outdoor persute weekend in the lakes in the middle of winter. Had to cross this icy ledge to get to the cave then through a tunnel full of water on your back with just your nose above water. Only way out was to abseil down a water fall. Wouldn't be allowed now |

when i went tk Mexico many moons ago they were exploring all the caves tunnels etc underwater. I went on a tour where you had to swim under water through holes to get to large caverns. It was incredible once in there but not for the faint hearted or those that struggle with swimming.
You could see all the diver lines near the floor where they were still exploring the cave/tunnel networks

"Ive caved and potholed a few times, ect'
Wow! I didn't actually think I'd find one brave enough
Can I ask what is it that makes it fun?😭"
Its exhilarating.. Its self control.. Rising panic, ebs and flows of feeling in control, Its laying there in a stupid situation because you read about it in a book and memorised the handdrawn map you wouldnt be able to get out your pocket if you tried, trying to calm your mind so you can move backwards to try and unhook your belt/kit from what ever its stuck on so a few shimmies later you stood up with loads of room around you with a daft grin on your face as you listen to the grunts and huffs of your friends.
Some systems flood and carry water all the time so they are smooth and if you fight through the flow to the top you can plop down and 'black water raft' (lay back, float) through the system and move through the earth how the water does, much like a swimming slide only infinitely more fun.
I dunno.. Even telling you about it im nervious.. I like the challenge
Ive only ever had a panic attack once and that was because of the sound of a waterfall, not because anythingwas actually scary or hooked up..
Most systems have been explored througherly and ive only dabbled really and done the 'safest' ones
Maybe its just thrill seeking adhd behaviour who knows 😂 |

I love that you find so much enjoyment in it. If I was a thrill seeker, I can definitely see the appeal from the way you just described it there.
But I am not and that just sounds like a really fucking scary nightmare 🤣🤣 |

I've been caving once in Wales, which included the "letterbox", which does what it says on the tin. It was fun at the time but I was in my 20s. Current me has just watched a video of it and is not sure what I was thinking!

Never done it and I would definitely give it a go. The claustrophobia and tightness, lack of mobility, difficulty breathing, trying to maintain concentration, being in the dark for an extended period of time. The smells.
It would be a vastly different experience to anything I've done. So, yes, I'd do it. Not sure how far I would get or how long I'd be down there. Sounds really scary. |

Nopity nope. Having watched videos of others. And docuseries about cave divers taking wrong turns and rescue attempts losing more people. The idea that someone would deliberately swim past a sign saying “X people have died here, please don’t do it” 🤢
It’s bad enough thinking about getting caught on a door handle with my cardigan let alone stuck in a dark cave “for fun” |

Brave enough... No
Stupid enough... Yes
Ive done it a load of times in the past with the Army, always been routes that are known and extraction etc is possible. Routes have been tight and difficult but where they lead has a known end if that makes sense.
I wouldnt do it like some of these YouTube videos of just 2 or 3 taking random guesses and risks going places where no one really knows. |

I saw one where the guy recorded himself going through a cave, and he was covered in spiders all crawling around.
Cave diving is an absolute no as is then you get swarmed with spiders on your crawl to death. No chance |

No, not for me.
When I went away on a School trip (waaaay back!) we visited some rock thing that had a very narrow entrance way that was also pretty low. Being tall, it just made me feel really panicky so that was that.
Plus I read about that man that went caving and got stuck and they couldn’t get him out, and he died and his body is still there. So no. Too many risks! |

Honestly don't get many creepy crawlies, away from the entrance

In a galaxy far far away |
There is a famous cave in America called 'Hellhole'
It has a metal shutter on the opening making the entrance very small, meaning if you can't fit inside you won't make it through the cave because of it's tight passages.
This is a great video of Hellhole, but I warn you, don't watch this if you are claustrophobic

I've been caving. It was years ago when a lot younger.
Mind you, I knew nothing of the horrors and probably couldn't have gone down if I'd known all of the risks and how people have died doing it.
There was a point where the guide had us all turn off our head torches.
Pitch black takes on a whole new meaning.
It was shocking.
Also had to squeeze through a few really tight flat slivers of space.
Always makes me shudder thinking back. |

Yes, I've done it in NZ.
Instructor took me a narrow way, as a joke, and I got my hips stuck!
THEN once inside a cave, had to abseil down into a vertical shaft - pitch black apart from your head torch, which upon reaching the bottom of the shaft, you had to leave the torch behind.
Knee deep in water, the roar of the spring made it impossible to speak and be heard. The only way out was to submerge, find a hole at the bottom and swim a few meters, with rock above your head, and hold your breath long enough until you could pop out the other side into an underground cavern, filled with glow worms.
It was both amazing and terrifying in equal measure.
Am I glad I did it? YES
Had I known what was involved before I did it, would I go? HELL NO.
Would I do it again? NO
Do the company still offer this activity? NO 😱😱

NO 😱😱

I did some caving on a school outwards bounds trip to the Isle of Man, it was quite good fun at the time, but not sure if fancy the more serious potholing etc. I work with a couple of people that used to be big into it though, they’ve done the ones around Ribblehead too |

One of my technical dive instructors was a cave diver and spent 40days permanently underground somewhere in Mexico I believe exploring a system - he gained the nickname Golum following that.
Some of his stories about exploring systems and getting stuck seriously made me doubt his sensibility, still explorers in general seem to have the self preservation/ need to explore balance skewed.
Tried caving once cold and uncomfortable - not for me.
Shipwreck and mild penetration yes I have done |

I’ve been in caves which for narrower, but anything involving wriggling? No chance.
There’s a hobby called “weaselling” between the blocks up the gritstone edges in the peak, and I won’t do that either.
I’m not built for squeezing into tight gaps. |

17, college trip, went down, cave at bottom, told to turn lamps off. All you could sense was the dripping water, you could not see your hand in front of your face. Surreal experience, never forgotten it. Pitch black |

"Accidentally fell down a YouTube rabbit hole last night watching cave exploration and disaster videos.
