Buy a Chinese car?

Would you buy a Chinese car? Some of them nicknamed Temu range rovers, have buyers who struggle to get insurance, as insurers are unsure of the risks level and how much profit they can make. SUVs are especially popular, which is bad enough, considering our infrastructure isn't built for this and other drivers have to be more courteous, allowing oversized van sized vehicles onto their side of the road, etc . Would you be happy buying a Temu termed vehicle, like a knock off big status tank, then paying over the odds for insurance, or even not having anyone want to insure it?
It certainly helps Chinese employment |

The Chinese car market was the best thing that could happen to motor industry.
Just showed how overpriced European car brands are and how they do very little innovation just to bump the sticker price by a few grand every year.
I was considering getting the Jaecoo but I'm don't like how everything is done through one big screen. Prefer separate controls for my heating/Aircon etc. |

"I don’t drive a car but Chinese motorcycles are seriously upending the big Japanese brands. Much higher spec lower prices. "
What Glow said.
The only issue with Chinese motors is they aren't widespread yet, parts familiarity etc.
I wasn't around for the jap bike Asian invasion but I've read about it, and history repeats |

I was looking at a Chinese bike, not available in UK yet it was in Germany; satnav, heated seats and grips, all the usual electronics like traction etc hard luggage factory fitted etc the lot.half the price of that spec from bmw. Insane. |

I know, I read all about it but that still doesn't justify for the European car to be X2 the price for the same car pretty much |

The insurance on the Range Rover trebled, as they were being targeted throughout the country. So it went.
The Omodo, Jamco (or whatever they are, i cant help but call them Jacamo) BYD's they are all good cars. Very well kitted out and relatively cheap |

If you can afford a RR, you can afford the insurance |

Time will tell. I’m not sure how great the logistical chain and support is for some of these vehicles. I believe that this is a concern for the insurance companies. If you damage anything, can you get parts? And that’s now, what happens in 4 years when stuff starts to wear out? What does that do to the residual value? |

When the insurance trebles though, because of a known manufactureers security fault. Paying three times as much for insurance to have it potentially nicked is a joke.
Being able to afford the insurance is not and was not the issue.

uts not just chinese cars, chinese motorbikes are getting better all the time.
cfmoto took people a few years ago from honda, suzuki and a designer from mv agusta and their bikes are also in the moto gp series and win races.
they load them with tech and roughly 3k cheaper then anything else in the same category. even harley davidson are bringing back the 883 sportster because the chinese bought all the parts and blueprints when harley sold it all and built it better than harley ever could and their 1200cc version was 4.5k cheaper than harleys when they sold them.
they will only get better and better

I wouldn't go near one. A friend has an MG and has a lot of trouble getting parts. Also there are a couple of brands that have gone out of business and have left people high and dry. I also have absolutely no intention of jumping on the EV bullshit bandwagon. |

I don’t get the acceleration thing. I (briefly) had a Ninja 1000..it could hit nearly 100mph in first gear and had 7 gears.why? What’s the actual point? We can’t use the power on congested, potholed roads.
Everyone should just have Fiat 500s with those powered by stardust stickers on the back and become either it. Egalitarian. |

Versys is a fantastic bike. I’ve had a gen 1 ride it across France, couple of gen 3s. Last bike (which was pinched so not on wheels at the month) was a Tracer 9 GT, before that I had a Kwak GTR1400. When I do get another bike it’ll be something mid size or possibly a maxi scooter. I get seriously turned on by practicality |

I've just got rid of my BMW and gone back to Audi
It was a stunning car and the dealership was absolutely brilliant - particularly with aftersales & service
It was very expensive to run though
Moving back over will save me over £1,600 a year in reduced road tax, insurance and extended warranty |

Drove a Xiaomi SU7 in Germany recently. Think in china it’s about 27000 to buy, will be a fair chunk more in Europe. They aren’t available fully yet but some have been personally imported.
Has 650 hp and tonnes of kit. Charges really quickly and seemed as well screwed together as any german brand. |

There is something not quite right with the calibration of the few Chinese cars I have driven. The steering didn't load up properly and the damping was not quite right for the type of car I was test driving. Dare I say they felt a little under developed. If vehicle dynamics isn't your thing then i doubt you would notice, but for me both left me feeling disconnected. Never felt that in a European manufactures car. That said most people aren't going to care and will buy big and flashy because of the price. |

Alot of them come with 7 year warranties and tbh if you are buying one new. You should be dumping within 3 years years anyway or be smart and buy one that’s a demo or 1 year old and already took the first big hit You still got the warranty low low miles etc
All modern electric cards have a residual value vs ice vehicles currently.
You can pick up some really nice used prestige brands used for cheap sub 25k full electric that are a couple of years old

It will be interesting to see what they are like after 3 years on uk roads for there first MOT.
The build quality of all 3 year plus cars now is shocking. Made out of rubbish steel corrosion is going to be a huge problem once they are 10 years old. Japanese cars being the worst for it. |

I brought a brand new Chinese vehicle through my company for work purposes. I do very high mileage every year and it came with a 5 year warranty, roadside and was fully 20k cheaper than the nearest traditional make I’d of usually got.
If it’s worth fuck all after the five years but it’s done the job I’m quids in already.
I’m 8 months in and it’s not missed a beat so far, towing a 3 tonne trailer all over the country and a lot of off road stuff on sites.
My guess is that it’ll still be worth half what I paid for it when I come to the end of the warranty period and I’ll just trade it against another new one and repeat the process.
As an added bonus it looks the absolute dogs bollocks too, had people asking about it everywhere I’ve been and the jaw dropping price.
I do agree with comments about the one big screen across the dash and it was annoying to begin with but now I’ve gotten used to it’s not too bad.
Otherwise, very very happy with it. |

Interesting.
Probably because the steering and suspension geometry came off a left hand drive drawing board.
I can remember that quite a few years ago that there was a common European designed vehicle (perhaps a Mondeo?) Which was known for not feeling right on our side of the road.
Anyone remember that far back? |

I didn't want an electric car, but to be honest the only complaint I have is that it doesn't jave an engine. Build quality is excellent and I have my motorbikes to listen to engine noise🤣 |

Specifications and warranty is key and with it delivering on performance at costs a fraction of what our country and Europeans charge then it makes absolute perfect sense to consider buying Chinese vehicle (they're already leaps ahead of the game with regards to technology). Would be very surprised in not being able to obtain insurance for a vehicle that's already sanctioned in trade deals for the UK market. |
