It’s the equivalent of McDonald’s really, fast food and beer but yes I do sometimes go in one. Usually at the start of a night out. Either the one in Charing Cross Road in central london or Baker Street one. Can’t remember the name of either lol |

Some are really quite nice, others much less so. Cheap drinks, food is basic but well done, what more do you need from this type of pub? A Michelin star restaurant can still be full of assholes, same as a Spoons.
I’m not snobbish about them, I like them. |

Best one I've been too and actually stayed at is in Rochester...top staff in all ways, big place, good vibe and busy for a Spoons...well, anything beats the one from my town where the staff are so slow and have the look of having a lobotomy👌😅 |

Where is the poshest Wetherspoon inn / public house / bar?
I was frogmarched into one by a recent 'date'. It totally ruined my erection for the rest of the evening...and we only in there for 5 minutes! |

Football's expensive enough as it is, without having to pay silly money for beer on an away day. I found Doombar for under 4 quid near Borough Market for Millwall this season just gone.
I can get over my snobbery for that. |

I'm in them most days as it gets me out of the house and can sit there with paper or book for couple of hours.
Food is OK for my simple tastes though wish they did bit more veg. Miss the steaks but supposedly too many arguments over what medium rare is.
I don't drink and most other places charge 3 or 4 quid for a pint of Pepsi max whereas most Wetherspoons meals do it for an extra 20 p
Also used to like finding out why they were named as they were |

I’m not a fan of spoons down to the fact that they destroy a lot of normal pubs who can’t compete with their prices.
No different I guess than Tesco and the like destroying town centres as you can get the majority of items in there. |

I quite like a spoons, set your standards to what to expect and it does everything as it should do. If you’re expecting great food then you’ll be disappointed but it does the job. The chips are pretty spot on though |

The local one here (Dovercourt) is in a lovely building (old Co-Op building).
It's pretty well maintained, and looks quite nice.
Not my first choice of pub, but it's great to take the grandkids to lunch in, they have the drinks and food they want at good prices. |

"I wouldn’t knock them , the beers always taste good
And where else can you get an all refill on coffee for £1.50 "
Which can provide a few hours haven for people young and old who may not have other places to go and can meet up with friends over a cuppa |

Not my favourite of pubs and some of them are better than others.
But cheap drinks and the foods not to bad. So yeah I use them occasionally.
Went to quite a nice one whilst in Edinburgh a couple of months ago, The Alexander Graham Bell |

The Square Peg in Brum. You get some proper oddballs in there, great for people watching. The Brier Rose round the corner, just like being in any other pub.
I do like the way 'spoons pay homage to local history with the decor too.

Great for people watching.
Toilets (usually) being up in the gods pi$$es me off (yes I know they have their reasons)
It’s a bit tiresome having to wipe your own table when you go in, but you get what you pay for etc.
Not too many of them seem to have decent beer gardens. Shame.
Some nice old buildings.
On the whole, they are ok. Do the job. |

Theres always exceptions to every rule but generally most spoons are like this. Hes been in enough to verify this is true.
It is what it is, spoons make enough money so it works for them. Spoons have always been a bit of a marmite pub anyway.

Almost all Wetherspoons I've been in are like this, except on Friday and Saturday nights where some are a bit livelier but full of people who are looking to get plastered.
I've been to a few in London that buck the trend - in terms of being more lively, not cleaner - but not really anywhere else. |

It was because the customers kept sending their steaks back to the kitchen apparently. As, not to their liking. Fussy feckers. |

The standing order on George street Edinburgh is always a reliable friend.
As said before, mcdonalds is a good comparison. Never great, but also never bad. It’s just reliably average and good value beer. Someone’s that’s all that’s needed! |

It beats me how a comparison can be made with McDonald's.
McDonald's have sold out almost completely to the drive through and 'deliverunts' market. Walk in customers are the lowest priority in the serving chain and gone are the days when you got something complementary if there was a delay. Apart from an after school mini rush hour there are hardly any eat in or take out customers any more.
Occasional non purchasing toilet users come in to brave the bogs.
Wetherspoons is primarily for stay as long as you like sit down customers, even though casual toilet users are apparently hindered. |

There will always be people that are ready to put down the 'spoons. Usually they are people that would never drink in one in the first place. My local spoons is the oldest wetherspoons pub and a fair few of the staff have been working there for 10+ years, so working there can't be that bad. Spoons employs young people to serve food and collect glasses whereas lots of employers do not take on under 18s. They train staff so you do not need experience. Lots of students work for the chain as they have flexible shifts. Anyone can use their toilets without purchasing anything. You can sit all day and drink bottomless tea of coffee for 99p. With the closure of working man's clubs, backstreet boozers and social clubs you will find lots of men that spend time at the spoons with other men avoiding the male loneliness epidemic. Food is cheap and edible. As a nightshift worker I often go in for my eggs benedict and a glass of Pimms at 9am. |

The problem with the one in Ilfracombe is they built a large rooftop area a chip throw from the sea. So all the seagulls dive bomb you, so they put up a wire cage (which looks ugly) but the gaps are large enough for the seagulls to get in.
So what happens is first time visitors ues it and wonder why no one is sitting up there, when the food comes out they find out. |

He threw some money at getting them to issue some insubstantive corrections and then paraded them as proof he'd not refused to pay his staff and instead pointed at supermarket vacancies (while competitors stood by their staff and paid them).
The problem is we have it all on video..

I like it more factual ...... He said to workers,'Anyone getting a job in a supermarket will be given priority when they come for their job back.'
e.g. If you get yourself a job in the meantime, I'll hold on to your job for you when this situation is over and the pubs open again.
HOW FAIR IS THAT? Great man. |

Just a few more facts.......... He initially said he could not pay staff until the gvt furlough money was in his coffers for him to pay them with.
Just a few days later - a few days - he reversed this following fairly widespread protest from various factions of society including thugs and vandals who damaged his property.
No one went without wages.
He's a good business man. And a good human being. Which can't be said for the property smashing vandals. |

We were down in London for the Army Navy rugby final earlier this year. And a pint of alright ale for under £3 vs £7-9 a pint is quite a big carrot in these times.
We mainly go for the food rather than the drink. It's just fair enough food, you go there for an ok feed at a reasonable price and always know what you're getting. Breakfast is a particular bargain with the unlimited hot drinks. It's probably one of the cheapest places you'll find for cooked breakfast. Yes again it's not top class but it's reasonable enough. And when they have failed I've never had a problem with them sorting it out.
In these times when everyone is feeling the squeeze a ok pint and an ok feed at a reasonable price is an attractive proposition. I suspect if everyone suddenly becomes more affluent all of a sudden their custom would drop.

I've never been in one so can't say anything in regard to food or drink or about the venues.
The nearest one to me is 50 miles away but I'm a non drinker and very rarely go into any pub these days.
My opinion on Sir Tim was tainted 20 or so years ago when they first started to open premises here in NI.
The MD of the company I worked for was a personal friend of his PA and we put forward a proposal to supply specific equipment to any Spoons outlet that opened here.
That proposal was accepted and on the back of a written commitment from Sir Tim we spent just over £10k on new equipment and an additional £1k on advertising.
That was a huge chunk of change to spend on one customer and it would have taken us a couple of years to get back.
The day before we were to begin installation he decided that he wanted the agreement to include every one of his premises across the UK which was impossible as we are an NI based company and what he wanted would have involved setting up a number of distribution centres around the country and employing 10-15 people just to provide the weekly upkeep of the equipment that was required.
When we explained this he said it wasn't his problem and cancelled the agreement.
We took a huge hit and never recovered our costs and as a result I struggle to find anything nice to say about him or his business model. |

I have nothing against Wetherspoons, you always know what you're going to get. I do miss mixed grill, but I was very positively surprised on Saturday, when I went for late lunch to one of Birmingham ones, Square Peg. They've got some new items on the menu, I went for chicken and tenderstem broccoli - not fried! The chicken breast was very tasty, mash thick and creamy, though the broccoli looked a bit sad. Still a great option. |

It's quite funny that people have such strong opinions over pubs. Spoons is just a pub like the rest except you don't have to care what you wear, it's nice enough. Food is pretty decent and you don't get the unwelcome feeling of going to a local for the first time. People looking at you with disgust like "never seen you in here before"
I'm not a fan of pubs in general. But when I had nowhere to live or cook or anything, I only went to spoons. Quiet atmosphere, don't have to get up to order and food was good enough. Can't ask for more |
